Sea of Faces
| Description |
: |
This sea of metal faces is part of a very moving sculpture by Leerstelle des Gendenkens called Memory Void. The multitude of faces, several layers deep, fills a winding corridor that has been designed so that the effect of looking down it, one feels it goes on forever. Visitors are encouraged to walk on this metal river of faces - the effect is eerie and sobering - the design of the space (with very high ceilings), the complete lack of any decoration on the white painted walls, the seemingly endless river of faces, the sound of metal on metal, all create a very reflective experience. For me, this sculpture was the most impactful experience at the Holocaust Museum, which is rich in architectural symbolism, but in my opinion, lacks real educational impact.
The artist dedicates the sculpture to all innocent victims of violence and war. The title "Shalechet" means "Fallen Leaves", which is intended to raise suggestion of both death and hope for new life in the coming Spring. |
