Sachsenhausen Death Trench

This is the death trench, which was used for executions before the Nazis perfected the art of mass exterminations in an adjacent building via gas and cremation. The trench is located slightly below grade to absorb some of the sound of rifles, but after visiting the camp, it is impossible to imagine that the residents of Oranienburg were completely unaware of the activities in the camp - the town surrounds the facility. Prisoners were either shot or hanged in this trench.
